the tree is up

Finally. The tree is bought, watered, recut, standed (stood?) and decorated. And it only took . . . well, let's draw a veil over the time frame, shall we?

Since everyone loves Christmas trees, and since I haven't done anything else blogworthy all week, here's the compete Christmas tree saga of 2006:

The before and after (apologies for the after; the Christmas tree never does photograph well, since so much of the drama depends on the twinkly lights in darkness.)

The tree skirt (this is for Sharon, who expressed curiosity.)

Lucie's very favorite ornament

My very favorite ornament

Other favorite bits

The infamous snail

I thought I was so grownup getting my own fresh tree and transporting it and getting it in its stand and all -- but you've got a TREE SKIRT. That's the sign of having it together. My own mother didn't have a tree skirt until I was a teenager and what did she make it out of? A red polyester accordian-pleated skirt from the late 70s that she slit open in the back and then arranged around the tree in such a way that you couldn't tell that it was a fake.

I love the tree! For all your objections to my taste in nonsensical literature, YOU'RE the one with the Alice in Wonderland tree, m'dear. Ironically, mine is very traditional -- angels, doves, bells, tiny nativities. I could use a snail. Or a cupcake.

Where did you get the great star for the top? Mine's currently got a very cheesy-looking bow, and it's gotta go. I was going to make a lovely beaded star tree topper but Sharon kept mockingly calling me Martha, so I tossed that plan.

Further evidence that you have creeping Alice Syndrome: the word "galumphant" in your previous blog. Did you make that up? I love it and so I am going to steal it.

I shall make it the name of my first album. Or my first novel. Or, if I never get my act together, my first child. Babies are much easier to make than novels (or so I'm told).

Well, the tree skirt and the star were both made by third world artisans. Sadly, said artisans were then exploited by Wal Mart, and the tree skirt cost me less than $5, the star less than $8.

I may be whimsical, but I am also an imperialist capitalist pig. Galumphant imperial capitalist pig.

We have no tree--just golden garlands and lights, from which we hung all our ornaments :) I like the snail as well....but the flamboyant white bird is pretty amazing.
